Noble Park was a purpose built skating rink. It was open by at least 1981. The rink is mentioned in the 3 July 1981 edition of The Age Newspaper for hosting the 1981 "TAA [Roller Skating] Australian Championships. Noble Park was home the N.P.I.A (pronounced Nipia, at least that's how i remember it) artistic skating competition. There is some debate amongst the skating community, but for now I think I will go with NPIA as standing for the Noble Park Interclub Artistic skating completion.
I sub-contracted this rink visit out. A friend of mine literally peeled back the layers of the former Noble Park Skateworld to show us what remains. I should say he had the permission of management to undertake this adventure. Please don't go disassembling operating businesses without permission. So a big thanks to Lollipop's Playland and Cafe for letting us take a look around.
Not too much has changed up front. A splash of colour and some rebranding is about it.
Not too many top 40 hits are getting played in the DJ booth any more.
Brown carpet was a big feature of Noble Park Skateworld. Some of it is still hiding, mostly out of sight.
But look a bit closer. Nothing like a fresh coat of paint to breath new life into your dated carpet.
It's still there! The rink surface lies dormant, but probably completely untouched.
The coloured light fixtures are still in place waiting to be turned on.
This 2001 N.P.I.A program comes from my very small personal collection of skating memorabilia
The below images were kindly provided by Fiona Cubbin, daughter of Mal and Bev Cubbin, former owners of the rink (~1987-2001).
Fiona, Mal and Bev Cubbin standing out the front of Skate World, and the giant skate.
Fiona and the rink mascot, Skater Gator!
I wonder how many people rocked a Skater Gator badge back in the day?
Bev and Mal's lifetime member badges.
Some rink singange. Anyone that's ever had gum on their skate wheels will appreciate this sign.
A nicely understated business card and admission ticket.
A 12 hour session, for a good cause. Raise enough money and you might even win a black and white portable TV!
