The building that housed the rink was opened in 1921 as a the Austral Picture Theatre. The 1981 "SKATECITY" Yellow Pages ad refers to the venue as a "ROLLER RINK & SKATEBOARD PARK". The rink hosted Victoria's first commercial skateboard park (see article below for further).

These photos showcase the pioneering skateboarding facilities at Skate City. The old Movie Theatre screen is clearly visible in the background of one of the photos. You can also see the fibreglass skate bowl under construction.
